    Rant on passwords

You know, it's all fine and dandy that many websites use form structures which set things up where the passwords are not remembered by the browser.

Then there's of course people who want the browser to remember the password, it's their computer after all.

But when the site does not allow the browser to remember the password, many users, rather than attempt to do something at keeping track of the many, many, seriously many, passwords that need to be used on many websites, defeat the whole purpose of having a unique password for each site and use one, easy to remember password for everything.

I really did not think much about this until an employee recently left the company, and in the process of clearing out the computer of "things his", I went through the browser's database for the passwords in case he signed up the company for something which would require a password that he made.

Imagine my surprise that this person used the exact same password on almost 100 sites, including such sites as paypal and his online banking. And all were still valid 2 weeks after he was no longer with the company.

Personally, I create new passwords on any site which requires one, and expect the browser to remember them, on about 360 sites I regularly go to, which requre them.

I've got about 200 sites in Roboform, but I imagine half or more are old sites I never visit on any sort of regular basis. I don't see how a browser could possible work for this unless you never travel or log in from other computers.

I had a friend a while back that used the same short all text password everywhere. And wasn't too afraid to give it out to people. I thought that was bad, but there wasn't much I could do about it.

Then I took him on as a co-admin. Access to everything including cpanel. Yikes! Now I keep bugging him about it, and he assures me he's using stronger passwords here. I sure hope so!
