That is a huge cap he missed. (look at the map)
According to some article on google news, neighbors said that the engines were much louder then usual which could mean that engines had more power and he was flying to low and tryed to fly a bit higher but didn't succeed.

Actually, I've been to the Canary Islands off the African coast and all of the airports border the beach. You can feel the heat and the backdraft from the engines as you sunbathe.... kinda cool until they blow a load of sand in your face.
