Default Laptop failure on the road!

For the first time in years I was left with no internet access hundreds of miles from home... TCP/IP stack, DNS and DHCP all seems to have died on my Dell Vista laptop and I have had no internet since Thursday morning - utter hellish.

I was close to buying a cheapo laptop just from a local shop to tide me over until I could reformat and reinstall my Dell. Typical

I think the lack of Internet was kind of good for you. I have watched programs about Internet addicts acting all crazy after computers were taken away from them for a few days.

    You managed to survive it.

Update your BIOS and Drivers from dell.com after you re-install Vista

Yeah, I dislike Vista but XP doesn't see he hard drive, even manually installing the drivers (imagine having to use a USB floppy drive these days.....).

Now I can't find the Vista restore CD either. Typical.

Carry a Ubuntu live CD in your laptop case. You could just boot up from that and be able to do web related stuff. The latest version (7.10) will even mount your Windows partitions so you can view files.
