Hm. With the server configuration you use, that's pretty competitive. Do you sometimes drop that number on older servers?

It is competitive. It's also pretty standard across the board... none of our servers are older than a dual xeon 3.0 or dual opteron 285 now. We don't have performance issues.

We are experimenting with some figures and virtualisation on a couple of new servers, but it is still around this figure.

What free hosts can provide, is hosting for one poor email address, oh yes, and a simple .html page with a 'hello world!' message.
Be ready for downtime, spam and a bunch of restrictions...

Some free hosts can do a good job, but those that do don't allow enough resources for a real hosting environment. It's by design, and at least allows consistent performance, but it won't be enough for a real website. They can be fun to play with though, and a good test for how to make efficient scripts! LoL.

the figure you mention should be domain hosted in the server.

here you might also can found this figure, as mention by matt, 300 acount, each account host 100 domain, end up 30,000 domain hosted in a server too
