    Default Windows 7 Ultimate

Wow. What an OS. Upgraded my laptop a few weeks back just to familiarise myself with it and did my desktop this morning and I'm loving it.

Probably the fastest, most stable and intuitive Windows OS yet

I'm now going to hide behind a large object as our tech team fire Linux/FreeBSD guided missiles at me.

I tried the 64 bit RC7. Liked it. Liked that I can run it from an external USB drive. Liked that it can use all 6gb ram.

Do not like that my $700 Kodak scanner doesn't seem to work with it. But I haven't played with it a lot, since the RC is going to expire so soon.

This is the fully fledged version from the action pack. Driver support blew me away - picked up random stuff like my Dymo label writer without third party drivers.

The only issue I have with it is I can't find the WWAN driver for my Sony VGN-Z31 laptop for the built in WWAN card.... and as Vodafone and I are 'negotiating' on a excess roaming charge of $4k, it's the only 3g modem I have.

BECAUSE IT'S S#*T!! It is seriously the worst program i have EVER seen. if you need a word processing program use open office or microsoft office 2003. The reason for this is there are these bugs in these.

If Win7 is the worst program you've ever seen then you haven't been around long. What's this got to do with word processing?

Been using Win 7 Ultimate on desktop and laptop for months now, along with Office 2010 Premium. Pretty happy with both.

Windows 7 was designed to be efficient with RAM Usage. I even saw a video on YouTube of someone who tried running Win 7 Ultimate on a 512 MB Ram. It did run actually but with a bit of lag although it was really fine.

That's how efficient the OS is. It's probably one of the best ever made. Been using Win7 Ultimate 32 Bit for 4 months now. No issues so far.

Runs decently with 6GB but I was considering an upgrade to 12... multi-tasking with Photoshop etc is not memory efficient

I rarely open more than 25-50 photos at a time in PS, but they're all like 1080p size by then. I'm having no trouble at all with 6g ram. One of my Google Desktop widgets keeps an eye on it and I can't recall ever not having enough, or ever even getting really close.

Now, 64 bit Photoshop CS4 is another matter. Odd things just don't work, and I've had to go back to 32 bit PS. Then there's After Effects CS4 and OpenGL crashing. Maybe their new Mercury whatsit will fix some of that. Maybe not.

    That's not saying much.

My Wife just bought a Dell Inspiron 1564 with Win7pro on it. As soon as she turned it on.. "This looks like Linux". (I cringed) 5 minutes later..... "This sucks! Can you install Linux on this for me?" (Good Girl!)

Me, Debian on her old PM@1.8Ghz 2GB Inspiron 8600 and the primarily used desktop running Slackware 12.2 on a P3@1GHz 2GB custom box.

Don't get me wrong, I "Love" Windows.... I make a lot of money fixing Win boxes.

Linux has it's place, but it's no match for a paid-for version of Win7 for most people. Clearly that doesn't include your wife, because I can't imagine my wife having the slightest idea what any version of Linux looks like. She's real happy with her new Win7 desktop replacement (although I'm awfully pissed her last laptop died after only 1.5 years).

I will agree to a point. For a server, Linux by far the best. For a normal user that does internet, email, office, and digital pictures... I'd say they could be better served by a distro like Debian where apps are easy to find and upgrade.

A user that does video editing, heavy multimedia, gaming, etc.... would be better off with a pc or mac. But that's because there is a strangle-hold on the top technologies and the majority of manufacturers aren't developing Linux ports or drivers.

I've switched some strong MS fans over because of their usage habits, and I've convinced others to stay with MS because of thier needs.

The choice of the OS does depend on the needs, really. I believe that once I quit gaming (or perhaps decently upgrade my PC to run games on) I will completely switch my laptop to Linux. Currently I'm happy with Win7 x64 on my Dell-Studio (especially since I upgraded its RAM to 4GB ) but I still have a Gentoo Linux installation on a VM Ware-powered virtual machine.
