I use a similar app - Monoff4 (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Desktop.../Monoff4.shtml) to turn off both my desktop displays with a hotkey. Much easier than having to fumble around for the power buttons. And they can be set to come back on with a mouse jiggle.

I hadn't seen that one. Is it similar to the ones I found, that it requires no installation?

The ones I highlighted don't need installation, because all they are doing is making use of built-in Windows API and dlls.

It's been a while since I found it, but I don't think an installer is included. I just use Macro Express to run the executable from it's folder with a keypress.

It's such a useful feature, I wish more laptops would include it as a dedicated hardware button.

I never knew that a plug-in software can be use to instantly turn off the display of my laptop. I will definitely implement this method and hopefully in conserving energy on my laptop.

FYI, For laptops you can also set Windows to turn off the display when you close the screen. The setting is in Control Panel>Power Options. By default I think it's set to go into Standby when you close it.

That option must be dependent on version of Windows or on brand-specific modifications. On my old XP laptop I have only three options onn closing the lid: Standby, Shutdown, or Do Nothing.

I think for most laptops you could already use the settings with regard to turning the display off when you close the lid. It is a good option though to have a special button that would automatically close or turn on the display on your monitor. Desktops could really maximize the use of this script as there is no available setting about that yet except for monitor timeout.

As has been stated by two of us, many laptops do not have an option to dim the screen but keep the computer running when lid is closed.
