    Default Roundcube Webmail Project

    Hey guys,

I just saw this webmail app in a new cPanel installation, it's called Roundcube and it's very cool. It would be a huge improvement over horde or squirrel mail.

I would love to see this implemented at WHB. Here's the link.

It's something we've looked at. Of course, for each webmail system we install it's going to add more load to the servers. We could install Roundcube, and probably disable Horde. Would that satisfy people?

I have no problem with that. I prefer Roundcube over both Horde and Squirrelmail.

I actually prefer Squirrelmail the least, but that's just me...

Looks great... I depend a lot on the webmail and I would definitely love to see this in place.

I would have it replace Squirrel Mail instead of Horde though. :P

I want to share my experience with Squirrelmail: since it have no graphic interface, it's fast and do the job nicely. Of course, is not an 'eye-candy' software, and all the desirable standard features are there.

For me, webmail should be useful in first place, because is not a replacement of an e-mail client, like Outlook or Thunderbird. Second, it should be secure and fast. Also, as far as I know, Squirrelmail is not server-stressing.

Just my two cents on this thread.

Let me share you my experience with Squirrel Mail. I have a client that I steered to WHB because I was very happy with them. She uses the email constantly on her server through WHB. But it's too complicated for her. She doesn't get it. I help her the best I can but to be honest the interface sucks. It's not a good design and it's not easy to use.

She has moved all of her professional email over to GMail because it was too much for her to login to cPanel everyday. Now she also wants to switch hosting companies because she is not happy with this one.

Email should be simple. It's just email. It shouldn't be complicated.

What you see as useless eye candy I see as good design and ease of use.

Clearly different people have different preferences. It's not necessary to slam one mail software simply because you prefer another.

FWIW, I know many SquirrelMail users. I use it regularly, and find it to be the most efficient, most flexible and most customizable of any of the open source webmail clients. I install my own copy so that I can customize it to the needs of my users, including many of the huge range of open source plugins available to enhance and extend its functionality.

Any update to what you guys (WHB) are thinking about this project?

I prefer outlook express, since all mails sent from my server end-up in junk-mail or bulk-mail.

See my post about the unmatching SPF/MX records.

Web-mail is just annoying, and you can only check one box at a time. I have over 10 e-mails. If I could, I would uninstall both those ancient e-mailers. They are script-based, and clunky, and hard to manipulate.

    That's my 2c.

Not to mention, they are not using secure connections for passwords, since we do not have SSL on our virtual servers. Passwords get broadcast unencoded.

As a matter of fact, SquirrelMail can check multiple mail accounts. It also can indeed be used via SSL.

As with anything else, if you don't like it (since you find webmail "annoying") then don't use it. Plenty of us do find webmail useful.

All of my accounts are not on my server.

If you find it useful, then install it. I do not want it pre-installed. It is a security risk, one I am not comfortable with exposing my clients data to. If I could, I would also ask that PHP 4 also be removed from my account.

Mails checked on MY account, which is a Virtual Server, without SSL, show as standard text files in my WWW dir, where the mailer program is installed. Which any bot can crawl and find. I do not like that. That is NOT a full SSL transmission, only the connection from the program to the mailer is SSL for exchange of the password. The mail-body is transmitted and stored in plain text. Easily sniffable, searchable, and is a violation of privacy, when I can read my clients messages on my server.

It is an inconvenience to attempt to setup those e-mail programs. I was just offering my opinion, as asked by the original post.

If you want to install this on your server I found a how-to article through another web hosting company.

    Default Roundcube :)

I'd just like to add my vote for Roundcube and my preference would be to replace SquirrelMail.

Once all the CP 11 upgrades are done, we'll be doing this.
