    Question Social Networks?

    Hello All,

I'm a new client on a VPS server (bronze). I am going to be running socialengine.net and my question is, do you guys think that the bronze should be okay to start with when starting a social network site running PHP5, Zend, Appache and more..full requirements here: http://www.socialengine.net/features/requirements

Sorry for the dumb question, but I'm new at hosting and at FTP. Basically, I'm just a dude with a lot of ideas who isn't very keen of web development.

    Later,
    Nick.S

    Hello Nick,

The requirements listed are fine for any of the VPS plans we offer. What really matters is the actual system resource usage by your project.
Without proper audit you may reach CPU/RAM limits fast and experience the overall VPS slowdown.

At any time you are welcome to request a piece of advice on our HelpDesk -> Virtual Servers department.

    Hello Maxim,

Thanks for the info. I might have to upgrade sometime soon then, business vps plan would most likely be my best bet but I'll start out on bronze and see how things go.

    Thanks,
    Nick.S

    Hello close,

I reviewed every option I could find on google. When it came down to the decision, I choose SocialEngine over Elgg because It's actively developed unlike most social network scripts. There is also a great market for customizations and personally, I think the overall designs looks way nicer, not built using tables anymore on the ZEND platform.

    Do you use Elgg?

    Default elgg

yes, i use elgg because: 1. the people behind social engine left clients high and dry without any support or development for well over a year (and sporadic support/dev after that) when they sold blog hoster without warning so can no longer be trusted. 2. elgg and many plugins are being actively developed unlike most social network scripts. 3. there is also a great market for customizations. 4 it is very easy to build plugins using php etc. i have created many without touching zend. 5. loads of plugins and themes are available and continue to become available. 6. elgg enjoys a very active developer community. 7. it is open source as are many of the themes and plugins being released.
