    Upload / Download Performance???

    Hi,

I am a new reseller here and I am finally getting everything setup on my account, but I have run into a real concern over the throughput available to my host... I am currently hosted on rs7 server and I am based in Australia.

The data throughput I am seeing at present is:

    Upload to Host = 30KB/s or 240kbps
    Download from Host = 26KB/s or 208kbps

My other hosting site (in Australia) gives me as much bandwidth as I have available to me at my office (1Mbps up / 5Mbps down). They are also extremely consistent, where the WHB downloads vary from 800kbps to 10kbps during a single download.

Am I expecting too much from WHB?? Or should I be moving on?

What numbers are other clients getting?

    Cheers,
    Aaron

One thing you might want to think about is your connectio to the WHB servers and their geographic location. You are in Australia, so to connect with anything other than an Austrailian server requires a satellite link. I have a nice broadband connection that gives me 1Mb up, 10Mb down. But when I try to connect to say London or Paris, I'm lucky if I get 1Mb down most cases less. (I'm in USA). From what I gather, the rs7 server is in the USA, Dallas TX to be more precise. If you want to know your connection to rs7 compares with other connections, I suggest you try: http://www.speedtest.net/index.php

    My results:

If there is a file on your website available for download in the 5MB range, I'll give you a little better idea of my results.

    Hope this helps.

The Upload to the Host looks pretty normal because many ISPs they cap your ISps very low but the download is not capped that much.

    Hi,

Thank you for your response and I totally agree with your comments regarding geographic location which is why I included my location. I am actually an IT person so I have a reasonable understanding . FYI, Australia has multiple fibre based carriers to the USA so it is not normally satellite to the US.

Having said all that, I have included below some speed tests from speedtest.net to show what I am getting (please note this may vary depending on the time of day I run them obviously):

    SYDNEY

    DALLAS

    AUSTIN (SEE NEXT POST)

    LOS ANGELES

    SAN FRANCISCO (SEE NEXT POST)

Obviously, there is some additional latency getting to central US but there also appears to be less bandwidth available when you compare the results for the West Coast USA. Interestingly, Austin is quicker than Dallas in my test, but I suspect may be based on ISP / host.

What I am really trying to understand is if the servers are quick to deliver pages or is the problem simply because of the geographic location so if I want fast download in Australia, I need to move to a hosting company on the West Coast (or even back to Australia). The issue with Australian hosting is bandwidth is expensive here, so you don't get very much for your money.

I would like to take up your offer on checking the speed to my website if possible, please use the file below which is about 5MB

    http://www.an.net.au/speedtest/testfile.test

Thank you to everyone for your feedback. WHB have also responded to my trouble ticket.

    Regards,
    Aaron

It wouldn't let me include all the images in one post, so here are the others...

    AUSTIN

    SAN FRANCISCO

    All,

I have some interesting results to add....

HTTP downloads are almost 10x faster than FTP downloads???

Some quick tests are showing the following results right now (11am SYD TIME):

    HTTP Get ~250KB/sec or ~2000kbps
    FTP Get ~29KB/sec or ~232kbps

Obviously there may be some additional FTP overhead, but I would not expect this big of a difference.

NB: This is using the same 5MB file (see link in previous post) for both methods.

    Cheers,
    Aaron.

Just re-ran Dallas test on speedtest.net after getting the results in the tests above...

It is now showing the same speeds as Austin and West Coast which is great news.

I guess the results of your downloads of my test file will give me the final details to decide on my hosting...

Exact stats on my download of the file are inconclusive. All I know is, it is the Windows Defender Install File, and it took me less than a second to download it. I downloaded it a couple time just to be sure.

It would seem that your general connection to Dallas is unstable. I would submit a support ticket and ask if they might move your site to a geographically different server. They do have data centers all over the place.

    Edit:

I tried it again from a different computer on my network, and it took 6 sec @ 794.22KB/sec according to the Download Statusbar addon for Firefox. A susequent test on my original machine gave a 5 sec @ 924.51KB/sec result.

Thanks heaps for taking the time to try this for me. From your results, the performance seems reasonable (not fantastic!). Can I ask where you are located?

    Thanks,
    Aaron

That kind of performance is pretty quick to be honest.

What kind of download rates are you expecting Aaron?

    Hi Mat,

I think they are reasonable as I said. My host hear in Australia is consistently above 10Mbps if you can support that speed, however I am looking at higher monthly costs for them.

Realistically, those speeds would be suitable to me as long as I can get them consistently in Australia. Most of my customers are here so I need good performance to Australia for it to be satisfactory.

I do understand that the bandwidth to AU is not controlled by WHB, but it is in issue I need to consider in using a host.

Is there the option to move to a server based on the West Coast (USA), as the response to the West Coast is faster as that is where the two primary fibre connections from AU reach the mainland US?

    Cheers,

    Aaron.

    I am currently on rs7.

It has been pretty good today for performance, but I guess Sat / Sun depending on the TZ so that will make a difference.

I will see how the performance is during this week and go from there.

    Thanks again for your assistance.

    Default Updated Speedtest

    Hi All,

With all the discussion recently on RS7 issues due to overloading, I have let the performance testing slide for a few of weeks to let everything settle and I have had mixed results over the period.

I have loaded a "mini" speedtest on my website, so that I can check the performance of the webserver. I am particularly concerned with the speed I am seeing tonight.

I won't poison the results by putting my stats here yet , but I am interested in seeing what other users get when they hit my server.

    Speedtest link: http://an.net.au/Speedtest.php

If you could take a quick minute to go to the link above to run the test and post your upload/download results in this thread. I will be eternally grateful.

    Regards,
    Aaron

I am getting this speed for up and down on speedtest.

I am getting 80 kb/s up and 300 kb/s down when uploading and downloading from my web, hosted on WHB. This is half of speedtest, isn't it ?
Why is that happens ? Cos of server limitations ?
