    Default FTP Download Limit?!?

    Hi,
I have been having a slight problem when using ftp to upload or download large number of small files. I currently use flashfxp and what happens is I will start downloading files very fast... then all of a sudden the connection gets dropped... it almost appears as the server has completely restarted. but in a few monments it allows me to reconnect.

Is there a max speed for the ftp downloads/uploads that I should be abiding by so as not to get temporary blocked persay from my server?

    thanks,
    Joshua Lang

WHB really needs to fix this.

I had the same problem. After 30minutes of solid uploading... BAM! ...my IP would be blocked from their site for 30 minutes before I could try again. No cpanel, no website, no ftp, no nothing!

I made sure my FTP client was set to use 1 connection and it still kicked me off.

This is a total PITA for new users.

You cna submit a ticket to have your IP put on their whitelist and it won't kick you off.

Problem is that my IP now has changed and I now have the same problem again.

yeah I put in a support ticket and they replied that I had too many open connections. apparently thats something that flashfxp does from the start... now to make it stop.

I know they say that, but I don't believe that is correct though. I should try it again with the command line FTP program in Windows...I think I had the same problem and that only does one connection.

I've been having that issue since last friday. My guess is a new firewall was installed and it's causing the problem... either way, it definitely needs to be fixed, otherwise Tech Support will likely be flooded with problems and complaints.

Why don't you use a friendly FTP program like FireFTP? I've been using that for quite a while now and have uploaded an entire website with no issues.

I has to be a glitch in their system. They once told me I had 215 connections to the server so that is why I was kicked.

I just submitted a ticket because I tried to download a 513MB site backup and it stopped every time at 10% complete. Not blocked, just stopped. My connection was so low it said it would take me an hour to download the whole file.

I just used the windows command line FTP program to upload 640MB of data with no hiccups.

I have to go back and try FTPVoyager again then...

I have the same problem in I can not connect to the site right now at all. I use FireFTP and just recently I have had this issue. I have also been kicked off when I was not using an FTP program... just the good old browser...
I have sent a ticket and all that they can say is I have too many connections... how that is possible in a browser; I do not know.

I have to use sftp to download my full /home backups. Otherwise I'll get disconnected. They told me they do not throttle the ftp or ssh connections and if I wanted a faster x-fer speed, to switch to a dedicated server.

    I don't know.... the best I get is 150 - 200kbps.

Is there a setting to set the MTU rates or the Max-Connections, or Max-Retrys?

Some programs are NOT server friendly, being created off freeware and GNU-Ware programs that were made back when 56K was a bottleneck that acted as a regulator. Having high-speed connections, sort-of makes those programs run in hyperdrive. (Using MTU's that are ultra small, or overly large, and opening 40 connections for separate data-packet streams, each pulling excessive headers, and improperly closing the micropackets. Thus, leaving 40 open, unterminated, waiting for them to TIME-WAIT close, while 40 new ones open, all downloading a 1Kb stream/packet.)

EG, try another FTP program, or use the C-Panel.

Totally agree with Colin above - I also uses FireFTP (a Mozilla Firefox add-on) and it seems to work great for me. Never had any issues on uploading files & folders.

Personally, I've not tried uploading anything larger than a 10MB file but I think it should work just the same.

Isn't there a way to only allow so many connections but not lock the person out?

The big problem now that I have found is that Microsoft's Expression web causes this problem unless I'm careful on how I use it.

It's a total PITA when I get locked out since you have to wait a full 30minutes to do anything.

This is the only provider I have had this problem with.

And also, as a stupid side trick to use, if updating a large number of files, heck, you DO have cPanel and Filemanager access, ZIP them, upload the ZIP, then EXTRACT.

I had this problem numerous times. Now I am afraid to upload/download an entire folder. I send only a few files at a time, otherwiser, the whole goes down.
I was told that I am using multiple connections. But I think it's a setting on their server. Because I have another site with another host and I can download the entire site, with the same FTP Pro installation and not a single problem.

I think tech support should look into resolving this issue. It's affecting too many of us.
