Do you do backups of any kind of our accounts? I just accidently deleted a database which wasn't meant to be deleted. Woops.

Sorry, just curious, I'll then submit a ticket if so.

Have a look in cPanel. I recall seeing links/buttons to obain daily or weekly backups.

We do daily backups, once a week the daily backup becomes the weekly backup. If you can't find the backup in cPanel, submit a ticket and we'll see what we can find for you.

There is no charge for this service, provided your billing is current.

I find it, but this requires that you have the backup stored locally on my harddisk to uplaod. I meant, do you hold backups on your servers which can be restored directly from your servers.

If you're counting on someone else to implement a backup strategy for you, your backup strategy needs rethinking.

I don't agree with that. Clients should always maintain a local copy of their web sites and other work, but also the host should do regular backups. Those host-maintained backups are the place to turn to get a key config file or other more system-related stuff when something goes wrong with the account.

Clients should keep local copies of anything that they create: web sites; scripts; etc. The host should do complete backups of accounts and settings. It can't be expected that clients should keep backups of account config, mail forwarder files, etc.

I've had situations on cPanel hosting when a config file or prefs file became corrupted after a cPanel upgrade. I was able to obtain a recent non-corrupted copy from the host's backup.

    "cPanel updates... Destroying cPanel? Fascinating!"

You're right that all hosts *should* keep backups, and most do.

If you check most service providers' ToS, you'll find a stipulation stating that "they make no guarantee on any data on their servers, including backup." This is a legal thing, which is why a lot of providers tell you to keep local backups, WHB included. We take a lot of care to keep current backups, but liability-wise, we can't tell you that we have "100% guaranteed backups."

Also, we only make 1 backup run a day. This happens at night(if you're in the US) so if you're working on a project at 3 in the afternoon and need a backup, you're going to get the backup from the night before. This is why I recommend a SVN/CVS for anyone who does a lot of coding. Check out TortoiseSVN if you're interested in this. I'd recommend keeping your repo locally, and burn them to a CD every week or two.
