.htaccess file disappears after upload..

I'm not very savvy in this kind of stuff, but I'm trying to upload an .htaccess file into a root directory, and it uploads fine, but then disappears after I refresh my file manager. If i upload it as "a.htaccess" or put anything before the "." then it stays fine. but if i then delete whatever is in front of the period, it disappears again. what can i do to make it stay?

Login to cPanel and use its File Manager to examine the directory contents. I suspect that your .htaccess file is still there. Many FTP clients require you to toggle a setting to show all documents, otherwise they hide things like .htaccess. I think that may be what's happening with your FTP client software.

i'm using the file manager in cpanel directly. it's the weirdest thing, as soon as i rename the file to .htaccess, it disappears.

ok, so i thought of one reason why this might be screwed up...

initially, i could have an .htaccess file, but then i went into the "apache handlers" thing in cpanel and added some handler for the extension .htaccess. but then i deleted it since i realized it was stupid, and it asked me 'are you sure you want to delete the handler ".htaccess"' to which i said yes.

i've had this disappearing .htaccess problem since.

forgive me, i know i sound really ignorant with all this.

The technicians can check server logs to find out what's happening with your .htaccess.

When you start file manager, are you checking the box which asks if you want to see hidden (dot) files?

I guess your using synchronization that will check changes form on site to another. if you don't have one file on to your main site then that will be deleted also on the second site. I hope it makes sense and have explained it well.

No, that is not what is happening. The poster's .htaccess was always there, he just needed to select the File Manager option to be able to view hidden files.
