Default upping the FTP connection limit from 2 to... something more reasonable?

just out of curiousity, is there a reason why ftp connection limits per ip are only set to 2?

i mean, i understand on shared plans that you need to scale it so that everyone can access the system, but 2 seems a little restrictive. especially since 1 connection is your actually connection to the FTP server, so you can only send 1 file at a time until you queue up your files and then disconnect yourself to let the transfers send. then due to the burst mode of FTP, connections sometimes get tied up and you sometimes even get locked out of the server until the FTP server detects you're no longer connected. it's can get pretty irritating sometimes.

especially if you're someone like me who deals with lots of small files (php mostly).

3 or 4 connections per IP seems more reasonable and i doubt it would increase the load that much... unless the servers are all on ancient architecture or too stuffed already.

We set the limit across all shared servers while back as we still have many servers of lower hardware specs (older ones), so, as you guessed, we have to put some kind of threshold on FTP transfers. On the other hand having a standard setting across all nodes is much more convenient for the staff (support policy wise), and it makes server behavior much more predictable and speeds up emergency response (e.g., if you see overload on some server, you can be almost sure this is not caused by FTP even before you log in).

However, higher connection limits on recent series servers are basically ok, and we can increase the numbers on request. Just drop in a ticket (under Technical dept.).

hey dennis, thanks for the response.

i sent a ticket on your advice. they said that they couldn't raise concurrent connections from 2. they also said that there's already a speed cap of 150K/sec, which is fine. don't understand why concurrent connections can't be raised though, especially when a transfer speed limit is already in place.
