Default MailFoundry Spam Protection - Server Migration Status

    Hi Guys.

As Saf announced, after working the numbers, we've decided instead of charging the $3/mo per domain we initially intended on charging for this service, and definitely instead of charging the $2/mo per mailbox that competitors often charge WebHostingBuzz will be offering this service 100% free of charge to ALL WebHostingBuzz clients, both shared and reseller.

WHB focuses on staying on the leading edge, and to my knowledge we are the first budget hosting provider to offer such exceptional spam protection to every client free of charge.

I will use this thread to notify clients when each server's migration has been completed. We will start slow, but I assure you we will have each server added ASAP.

    Changes you will see:
    • Daily Digest every day detailing which spam has been quarantined allowing you to scan over one email and unblock any legit email that may be blocked (1 in 1,000,000 false positive rate though!)
    • Faster servers! Since we're migrating spam filtering off of the server, the server will be able to focus more on the HTTP, Databases and more essential applications. The MailFoundry will lower the server's email load by over 80%. There will be noticeable performance increases here.
    • Most important....No more spam!

That's it. No changes on your side, mail will arrive as quickly as ever. Your inboxes will be cleaner then ever, your mornings..better than ever.

(I welcome any comments/questions in this thread. I will update the second post with server status as we go. We do not have a pre-set list of servers at this point in order to tell you when your server will be, we will doing it server-by-server as needed. Please don't request for your server to be next)

Do we have any way to customize the settings for our account, such as how high the filter is set and whether or not we receive the email?
If a message is blocked as spam, will the sender receive any type of notification, just in case it is legit mail?
How does this affect outgoing mail, especially as pertains to the repeated blocking of the mail server by Comcast and other providers?

    Thanks!

    Hi,

You can contact us with customizations, people sending you the email would not receive any sort of notification that the email was blocked, but you'll receive that quarantine report (I can make it go more often as well)..

It won't effect outgoing mail at this point at all.

Since I've been using it (I was a beta tester), I can say that this service is by far the best I've encountered.

Each morning, I receive a list of all emails that were marked as spam, or contained viruses. I've had a total of 4 emails slip through that were actually spam, and my mail client (Mozilla Thunderbird) took care of that. There was one instance where a ham email was marked as spam, but there's a link in each quarantine report where you can release the email and report it, basically whitelisting that address. All other emails from that address since have had no problems.

I've attached an image to this reply. Next to each email, you see three links. The first link, "View", allows you to view the email in an HTML webpage if you are unsure of it's contents. Next is "Release", which basically releases the email from MailFoundry and allows it to pass into your inbox. The last link is "Release & Report", which does the same thing Release does, only whitelists the address so further emails from it can be allowed through the system.

Nick mentioned that there would be zero false positives. That's difficult to believe, as even the best systems have some false positives (legitimate mail marked as spam). In the post before mine, SupremeChaotic mentioned that he had a false positive.

    Hi,

As for any emails that slip through, please mail those to spam@mailfoundry.com, any emails that are not spam that were marked as spam, that are not sensitive you can email to notspam@mailfoundry.com.

    This helps the unit train.

Pretty sure I've mentioned the 1 in 1,000,000 false positive rate, don't believe I said 0 anywhere. If I did, it was misspoken.

It's not been a problem. With the one ham, I just used the "Release and Report" option, and that's been it. It's not had any problems passing through since. For the actual Spam, I noticed that MailFoundry had picked it up the next day, so it wasn't an issue to me either.

And to Alan, I never reported anything to the guys here at WHB, which is probably why they have that number. It was reported straight to the system.

Nick - I'll be able to give feedback after this saturday, when we switch our main company domain to rs7. We get a lot of spam on that domain ... but this should help.

    Sounds good.

For some of you, mainly on Athena, we did have some mail backup issues, it was caused by the mail server reacting weirdly to the fact that all mail was coming from one IP. Thinking that it was an attack and blocking it. The mail was queued and is now clearing. It won't happen again.

Just an idea of what we're looking at though, the firewall is eliminating nearly 85% of all mail now before it even hits our servers.

So far and I have to say I'm delighted with MailFoundary's spam protection on rs7. Usually I'm fending off spam throughout the day, today nothing bar three MailFoundary reports which flagged a single email in each report (also spam). Ironically though, these reports were in my Gmail spam folder!

I've disabled Virus checking on the MailFoundry temporarily while I resolve some issues. Spam is still being filtered but a virus could get through for a few minutes.

On Alpha. In our first 2 days I did receive 1 false positive but still think that on balance this is a terrific benefit! THANKS!

I just found out about MailFoundry today when I went into Hotmail. It had been put in the junk file but I spotted the whbdns address so opened it up. This looks to be a fantastic service and will most assuredly help WHB take the load of the servers.

I am more glad than ever that I switched accounts to WHB, and recommend it to others.

Thanks again for prompt action to problems and being so proactive!

    Mark

PS: I was getting a lot of spam (60+ per day) to a webmaster address. I got fed up and picked one at random that looked like a true email address then did a redirect to that addr - I hope he likes the taste of his own medicine!

Now that MailFoundry is active I guess I can stop my bit of revenge.

Who is "he"? If you mean that you redirected your spam to the FROM address of one of your spam messages, then all you have done is to add to the problem. Those sender addresses are not the addresses of the spammers. They are forged addresses, so your spam will just inconvenience someone whose address was forged, and you will add to the general deluge of spam and overloaded mail servers.

We have reached our "preferred capacity" on the first MailFoundry unit. We've chosen to limit the MailFoundries to roughly 40% actual capacity to ensure that any future spam/virus attacks can be handled appropriately.

Our next MailFoundry will be online shortly and the next 10 servers will be added.

Thanks for everyones patience! I'd love to hear feedback from those in the first group.

I'm on Fish, which you have may recently 'upgraded' to this service. Currently all email is down on all my domains. Any email sent to my accounts is immediately rejected by the submitting client with a DNS error. I hope you guys get this resolved quickly but also a warning before a big change like this would have been appreciated.
